What to Do If You Have a Sewer Backup
If sewage is backing up into your basement or floor drain, stay calm — and act fast. A sewer backup is stressful, but knowing the right steps can protect your family, your home, and your wallet.
Stop using water and call for help right away.
Do not use any appliances. That means no flushing toilets, running the dishwasher, or using sinks until the backup is cleared. Any water you send down the drain will just add to the mess in your basement. Call Sewer Ninjas or another sewer drain cleaning company to fix the problem as soon as possible.
Stay safe around standing water.
Try not to touch anything exposed to the backed up sewage. The sewage contains bacteria, viruses, and pathogens that can make you sick. Never stand in water and use electrical appliances or outlets — as it is a serious risk of shock. Wet surfaces can be slippery. Use caution when entering basement and if there is standing water, contact your local utility company or a licensed electrician before entering.

Who fixes what?
If the city checks the main sewer and it’s clear, the problem is likely in your private sewer lateral (the pipe from your house to the street). As a homeowner it becomes your responsibility, and that’s where Sewer Ninjas comes in. We’ll inspect your line with a camera, clear the blockage, and repair or reline the pipe so it won’t happen again.
Clean up and preventative maintenance.
Once the sewer is flowing again, remove sewage and water as quickly as possible. Wash surfaces with hot, soapy water, and make sure to disinfect with a bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Cleaning solutions can be hazardous or even fatal if misused; read and follow all directions on cleaning product containers. It may take days or even weeks but give the area time to dry the area completely with fans and dehumidifiers.
To prevent future backups:

Install a backwater valve if you don’t have one (required by code in newer homes).

Keep your existing backwater valve clean with semi‑annual maintenance.

Have your sewer lateral cleaned and inspected every few years, especially if you have clay or cast iron pipes.

Ask your insurance agent about sewer backup coverage — most standard policies don’t include it, but an endorsement is usually affordable.

After unsuccessful snaking, this company was recommended, and I could not be happier. We had a series of tree roots growing through our sewer line, and the team scheduled an appointment quickly and removed them. They documented everything with video which made the insurance claim very easy. We also had them reline the existing pipe, and while that process did have a few hiccups, the team returned multiple times to correct the issues and ensure the job met their standards. This definitely impacted the profitability of the job, but Sewer Ninjas prioritized job quality and the long-term health of our home.
