Types of Sewer Lateral Material
Clay Pipes
Clay pipes, commonly used before 1980, are prone to cracks and separations due to ground movement and age. Over time, they are highly susceptible to root intrusion and structural failure, leading to frequent backups and the need for replacement within 50 years depending on tree presence.
Cast Iron Pipes
Cast iron pipes, widely installed in homes built before 1980, often suffer from internal corrosion and rust over time. This corrosion weakens the pipe walls, causing blockages, leaks, and eventual collapse if not addressed. Like clay pipes, they often need replacement within 50 years of installation, meaning now is the time to check if your home is build around 1980 or prior.
PVC Pipes
While PVC pipes are more durable, they can still fail due to poor installation, joint separation, or ground movement. While they are more flexible than clay or cast iron, external pressure or damage can cause cracks over time, leading to blockages or leaks requiring repair or replacement.
Cured in Place Pipe (CIPP) Reline
CIPP relining creates a new, seamless pipe inside your existing line without major digging, eliminating joints where leaks and root intrusion commonly occur. Highly resistant to corrosion and ground movement, CIPP systems offer a durable, low-maintenance solution designed to last around 50 years, outperforming traditional clay, cast iron, and PVC options.
